Press Release

The Prosecutors within the National Anticorruption Directorate – the Territorial Service Brașov ordered the start of the criminal investigation against the suspect:

POPESCU TĂRICEANU CĂLIN CONSTANTIN ANTON, President of the Senate, charged for the offence of perjury and favoring the perpetrator.

The ordinance drawn up by the prosecutors indicated that there data and indicia leading to the reasonable suspicion describing the following state of facts:

As part of the investigative activities conducted in order to clarify the case regarding the alleged unlawfull restitution of a plot of land located in Snagov forest and Băneasa Farm (whose indictment was communicated through the press release no 654 from May the 18th, 2016), the subpoenaing was ordered, in order to be heard as a witness, of Popescu Tăriceanu Călin Constantin Anton. This subpoenaing was necessary under the circumstances that he was aware about the criminal activity of the above mentioned group, due to the business and friendship relations he had with the members of this group.

Being heard on April 15, 2016, with a testimony taken under oath, the charged person has made statements that were not consistent with the truth about the critical details of the case on which he was asked and did not say everything he knew about the critical circumstance, thereby aiming to prevent/ hinder the investigations and criminal liability of the defendants prosecuted within the indicted case, communicated through the press release no 654 from May the 18th, 2016.

Thus, the suspect Popescu Tăriceanu Călin falsely mentioned that he did not know about the purchasing of the successional rights of Al României Paul by Silberstein Tal, Truică Remus and others and that he did not discussed with Truică Remus about the notary taxes. Also, he claimed that he did not have a close relationship and did not keep in touch with the defendants Andronic Dan Cătălin and Silberstein Tal, with whom he had only met occasionally, and that he only found out about this file from the media, as result of DNA press releases. He also indicated that he did not introduce Tal Silberstein to other politicians from Romania.

He also claimed that he did not have a close relationship with the defendant Marcovici Marius, also hiding that he was not aware about his relationship with the defendant Tal Silberstein.

These statements are not consistent with the truth and they are contradicted with the evidence administrated in this case (statements of witnesses, suspects and other means of evidence).

The suspect was informed about his criminal status and his charges, according to the provisions of art. 307 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

It should be mentioned that the criminal action represents a stage of a criminal trial regulated by the Criminal Procedure Code, a situation which cannot, under any circumstances, infringe the principle of presumption of innocence.
